Are You the Predator?
Plenty of capable manufacturers have been swallowed up by more dominant competition. Dominating competitors have learned that profits are not generated by manufacturing competence. Profits are generated by creating and exploiting market opportunities that create perceived economic value to the customer. When this occurs, customers are willing to pay a differential to receive the manufacturer's products and services. Manufacturers must then exploit this advantage by making sure their operations are capable and efficient by eliminating problems.
Dominant competitors don't tend to compete on price. Sure, they must be reasonable from the customer's perspective, but their message is usually about value. They have learned that price pressure in the market is a message from customers that the manufacturer's products and services are mediocre. Competing on price places the manufacturer lower on the competitive food chain.
